Cable Wasteland Episode #12

Cable Wasteland Podcast – Buug-er-ed Wasteland

Episode 12.

Hello and welcome to Cable Wasteland. A podcast where we invite you to join us on the couch for a chat about what we’ve been watching.

Who is on the couch this week?

I’m Wemb, with me are my co-hosts Wych and Zedd. We’ve also made room on the couch to welcome special guest…

our good buddy and my own personal turnfer…Bugger.

Stop Press! Bruce Campbell news!

the Comic-Con experience: at an earlier roundtable, “Burn Notice” creator Matt Nix and writer Alfredo Barrios Jr. emphasized the importance of directly connecting with fans on such a huge scale. Nix did note, though, that Ballroom 20’s enthusiastic crowd “may just be screaming for Bruce, but I’ll take it.”

That Bruce he is referring to, of course, is series star Bruce Campbell, who is something of a cult legend thanks mostly to his role in the Evil Dead series. During his roundtable session, Campbell was asked about the Facebook campaign to get him to host Saturday Night Live and, while he said he had yet to hear of it, he was very gracious towards these fans. “You’re all fine people, and I love you all,” he said. “And I hope to hell you’re successful.” In just a short while, Campbell unleashed a slew of great soundbites, but my personal favorite was his description of why he chose to star in Burn Notice. “I don’t like cop shows, I don’t like lawyer shows, and I don’t like doctor shows,” Campbell said. “I will not watch any of them. And [Burn Notice] is none of the above.”

The Playback:

[Anything that isn't current- old episodes or old shows]

Wemb:

watched the last two episodes of Stargate Atlantis
sad to see any great show finish up, even moreso this one
best show ive seen and one everyone has to watch was the second last show entitled Vegas
alternate reality, shepard was a detective, life went in a diff direction.
murders by a wraith who had gone through a rift between realities and was killing people
wraith was staying hidden and one of the best sequences i have seen in tv in years was the wraith disguising himself as a human and going to play poker. the look of the wraith and the music they used were perfect.
shepard in this reality was a gambling addict so the scenes where he was playing poker against the wraith and the chase scene that follows were amazing.
the rest of the episode was great and the whole multiple reality thing was something i would have liked to have seen expanded but i wasn’t to be i guess.
i also finished watching s01 of Breaking Bad.
shout to Hyp, this is an amazing show and i cant wait to watch season two.
the way he deals with the crazy druglord Tuco after he beats up Jesse is awesome.
he does an intriguing mix of desperation and nothing to lose.
Wych:

Spartacus Blood & Sand
Strong “300″ feel
The fight scenes are ok, a little to much of the same heroics over & over – throwing the sword etc
Plenty of soft core skin – very Caligula
The blood is cartoonish & comes in waves to the point that it has no meaning
Kick Ass
Yes it does!
Good sound track
Hit Girl is AWESOME!
Nicholas Cage channeling Adam West’s Batman is annoying
Zedd:

Bugger:

Big Love (season 1)
fascinating characters; Polygamist Mormon husband (Bill Paxton) and his 3 wives and all their children
One of Bill’s wives is the daughter of The Prophet of a polygamist congregation and The Prophet initially loaned Bill money to get his home improvement store off the ground
When Bill opens a second store, he thinks he only owes loan repayment from the first store, but The Prophet (who has really good lawyers) made sure he got a piece of everything Bill owns
only about 1/2 way thru season 1, but The Prophet is just creepy and nothing short of a loan shark
Mad Men (season 1)
gorgeous show.
Don Draper is a hot shot advertising exec in 1960s New York City. And, we learn fairly early he isn’t exactly who he says he is.
The execs are boozing it up with the broads in the office leaving DNA all over the furniture.
I was born just 20 years too late.
Dr. Who
watched the older series with Tom Baker and some Jon Pertwee, but I’d like to start watching the David Tenant series

The Guide:

[Shows that are airing new episodes now...somewhere!]

(start, or add notes on whatever show you want to contribute something about, that way we cover one show at a time.)

Rush

Wemb:

season 3 started on Aus tv this week 8:30 thus on ten in aus.
the only cop show i watch these days
follows a police tactical response unit in Melbourne
this week responded to someone tampering with the police helicopter at the airport
car chase across the airfield which was pretty cool, quote of the week- Josh- “Leon you have halted all planes from landing, right?” (as they chase the car up the tarmac with a plane seemingly headed towards them) Leon- “I have requested it Seargant Joshua.” Josh- “Well ask them again and use your serious voice”
awesome show, lots of action, twists and the cops dont always win.
this week two of the guys also have a meal at a restaurant and realise they dont have any way to pay for it, so they end up doing a runner with the owner chasing them down the street shouting “i’m calling the cops!”
True Blood

Wemb:

hasn’t started on foxtel here yet, but 5 episodes aired in the states
we know enough people, there is enough on you tube, there are spoiler websites and podcasts galore, so we can talk about it now without worrying.

MINI TOPICS

Bill- kidnapped by werewolves under control of the king of mississippi. The king wants to recruit Bill and with his help marry the Queen of louisiana and extend his power.

The queen is still batshit crazy and i look forward to her response to the kings moves!
the finish to episode 3 was a showstopper and will be talked about for a very long time indeed!
My question is will Lorena last to the end of the season
Sookie- is trying to find bill, she is also learning about the werewolves along the way with the help of Alcide.

[not for airing if you don't want - (via Bugger) Alcide /swoon! Werewolves are sexy!]
Alcide’s ex – a girl named Debbie – is quite the little spitfire and if the storyline follows the book, she will prove to be quite annoying to Sookie.
Sookies’ entry in to the Were world seems to easy for me considering the bad blood between the dogs & fangs
The Were bar was ok but predicatable
Eric has been commanded by the queen to liquidate all the v-blood he has been selling for her as she has a large tax debt and the magister is enquiring about the dead vampires and large amount of v being sold in her area. He is also protecting and helping Sookie.

Sam has found his biological family and his mother and brother are also shifters.

i find the sam storyline a little uninteresting. hopefully it will spark up a bit.
When the family comes to Bon Temps, there is a dynamic that we don’t quite know what’s happening yet
Tara is struggling to get over the death of Eggs, and meets a shady vampire called Franklin mott.

Franklin is bat kwrap crazy – it’s about time we saw a real rogue vampire, they are all too civilised in my opinion
Jessica doesn’t know what to do with the body of the trucker she accidentally killed, and is leaning more and more on pam to learn about vampirism.

pam absolutely cracks me up. her dead pan delivery and lack of caring is priceless!
later in the season Pam’s existance is threatened and we see how much Eric really cares for her
Lafayette gets a love interest & a sweet new ride

The Hard Life of RJ Berger

Wych:

The Hard Times Of RJ Berger orbits the hilariously-hellish lives of a deeply unpopular 15 year-old (Paul Iacono) and his scheming, sex-obsessed best friend, Miles Jenner (Jareb Dauplaise). Other than pining after the girl of his dreams, Jenny Swanson (Amber Lancaster), receiving daily beatings from the meanest jock in school, Max Owens (Jayson Blair), and evading the stalker-ish advances of Lily Miran (Kara Taitz), there really isn’t much excitement in RJ’s life. That is, until his anatomical gift is accidentally exposed to the entire school. In a single moment, RJ goes from anonymous to infamous, and for the first time in his life, he feels a tiny sliver of confidence. Swept up in this man-sized wave of recognition, we’ll watch RJ claw his way out of the popularity basement. Whether it’s trying to get laid, dealing with his bizarre parents, or simply navigating the treacherous waters of sophomore year, RJ will live out the stories — good, bad and ugly — that we all remember from high school. One mis-adventure at a time, we’ll see him grow from a shy, awkward boy into a slightly less shy and awkward young man. Part The Wonder Years and part Superbad, The Hard Times Of RJ Berger is a loud, funny, raunchy, sexy look at the life of lovable loser.
This is the MTV version of Hung
Usual array of dick jokes & plenty of teenage flesh to the limit that MTV will allow
I got a few good laughs

The IT Crowd Season #4

Wych:

Return of the show, the laughs are still there
The episode with the entertainments manager is pure gold

Dr Who

Wych:

Season finally aired in a 2 parter on Aus Tv a few weeks ago
Good finish to the season
Fun episodes with good use of the “Time” part of Time Lord for a change
Nothing now until the Xmas special which looks good if the end of the series is any indications.
SIDE NOTE: Torchwood is getting another series according to new sources

Fast Forward:

[What are you looking forward to in the week ahead?]

Wemb:
